In-Service Training

ACT 48-Approved Continuing Professional Education Programming

Continuing professional education is important in Pennsylvania. Act 48 of 1999 requires all professional educators holding Pennsylvania public-school certificates to participate in continuing professional education. The Byrnes Health Education Center offers the following approved Act 48 Teacher In-Service programs, so school districts can readily provide credit-bearing continuing education.

  • Drugs 101 In-Service
This program is an eye-opener for all participants, as we discuss the latest trends, paraphernalia, and methods of use surrounding substance abuse. With a dynamic "mock locker room" as the backdrop, participants will garner first-hand knowledge on how students are using, hiding, and selling drugs in and around schools. Following this program, participants will have a better grasp of their district's drug policy and what they should be looking for in regards to usage among students.
  • True Colors In-Service
Understanding basic concepts related to personality is the focal point of this program that involves "coloring" each participant. Determining your own personality traits and understanding others' traits lays the foundation for learning how to incorporate teamwork and group activities into the classroom. Knowing how each student learns best, by recognizing their basic traits, will assist the teacher in having a more dynamic and cohesive classroom.
  • AIDS 101 In-Service
As HIV and AIDS information continually changes, many professionals feel uncomfortable tackling this sensitive subject with students. In this factual, yet engaging, program, participants will be exposed to the history of the disease, as well as the current treatments and applications of teaching the material. Learning how to present this sensitive material to varying age groups— utilizing interactive tasks—is a vital component of this program.
